Citrulline Malate vs L-Citrulline: The 56.64% Detail

Quick answer

Citrulline malate vs l-citrulline is a difference of weight. L-citrulline is the free amino acid, while citrulline malate pairs it with malic acid, and the NIH puts citrulline at 56.64% of the malate salt by weight. So 500 mg of the salt holds at most about 283 mg of citrulline, before any other ingredient shares the blend.

No. 01Two forms

What is the difference between citrulline malate vs l-citrulline?

L-citrulline is the plain amino acid, and citrulline malate is that amino acid bonded to malate, a salt that adds weight of its own.

Imagine a coffee with sugar already stirred in. If a recipe says 10 g of sweet coffee, only part of it is coffee. A salt works the same way on a label.

The NIH says citrulline malate is 56.64% citrulline by weight, so 1 g of the salt gives 566 mg of citrulline (NIH ODS, arginine and citrulline). The rest is malate.

That is the whole detail. It sounds small, but it changes every dose comparison you make. Check the Supplement Facts page to see how the label words it.

No. 02The arithmetic

How much citrulline is in 500 mg of the salt?

At most about 283 mg, and only if the whole 500 mg blend were citrulline malate, which the label does not say.

The label lists the blend by weight, with citrulline DL-malate first (21 CFR 101.36). First place can hold at most all 500 mg, so the ceiling is 500 mg of salt. Multiply by 56.64% and you get roughly 283 mg of citrulline.

Citrulline from the salt, using the NIH 56.64% figure. Ceilings, not label amounts.
Salt weightCitrulline, at mostWhere it comes from
500 mgabout 283 mg1 capsule, ceiling
1,000 mgabout 566 mg2 capsules, ceiling

3,000 mg of l-citrulline3,000 mgLow end of trial doses of l-citrulline (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline and BP)

The ODS figure is for citrulline malate. The label says DL-malate and gives no ratio, so treat our numbers as estimates. The citrulline page walks through the rest of the profile.

How does that compare with what trials used?

The trials used 3 to 9 g a day of l-citrulline, and the capsule's ceiling is a small fraction of that.

Eight small trials of l-citrulline ran 1 to 17 weeks at 3 to 9 g a day. Systolic pressure fell 4.10 mm Hg on average, and the diastolic change was not statistically significant (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline and BP).

Even at the ceiling, a capsule holds under a tenth of the lowest trial amount. At the label's top dose of two, it is still under a fifth. The bars show the blend lines against the trial grams.

No. 04Reading labels

How should you read other citrulline labels?

Check whether the number is the salt or the amino acid, and whether it sits in a blend.

  • Does the line say l-citrulline or citrulline malate?
  • Is the amount per capsule, or per scoop of several things?
  • Is it listed alone, or inside a proprietary blend with no split?
  • Does the label give a ratio of citrulline to malate?

Melonex answers the first and fails the last three: a blend, no split, no ratio. The malate and AKG page says more about the salt parts.

Medicine check

Citrulline may push pressure too low with pressure drugs (RxList, L-citrulline). Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor what you add.

No. 05Bottom line

What does the 56.64% detail change?

It shrinks every salt figure to its true citrulline share, so claims that match trial grams need a second look.

Nothing here says a capsule is useless or harmful. It says the label asks you to trust a total, and the math underneath is smaller than it first sounds.

Before you take it

Melonex is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take a nitrate for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil, any blood pressure medicine, a potassium-sparing diuretic, a blood thinner or a diabetes medicine, or if you have had a heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can push blood pressure down further. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

No. 06FAQ

Melonex questions people ask

Is citrulline malate the same as l-citrulline?

No. L-citrulline is the free amino acid, while citrulline malate is a salt that adds malate. By the NIH figure, 56.64% of the salt's weight is citrulline, so equal milligrams do not mean equal citrulline.

Which form was used in blood pressure studies?

The meta-analysis we cite covered oral l-citrulline, 3 to 9 g a day. Citrulline malate was not the focus there. That is one more reason a capsule label cannot be matched to those trial doses.

How much citrulline does one Melonex capsule contain?

The label does not say. The blend is 500 mg, and the citrulline salt is first, so it holds at most 500 mg, which is about 283 mg of citrulline by the NIH ratio. The true amount may be lower.
