Foods With Arginine and Citrulline: Watermelon, Nuts and More
Foods with arginine and citrulline are everyday ones: nuts, seeds, poultry, fish, dairy and beans carry arginine, and watermelon and other melons are the best-known source of citrulline. The NIH says a typical diet supplies 4 to 5 g of arginine a day, far more than a Melonex capsule blend.

Which foods have arginine and citrulline?
Foods with arginine and citrulline are plain ones, and you may eat several of them before noon.
Arginine turns up in protein foods: poultry, fish, dairy, nuts, seeds and beans. Citrulline gets its name from the Latin word for watermelon, and melons, cucumbers and squash are the usual food examples.
Your body also makes citrulline and arginine on its own, so food is only one part of the supply. We give no gram amounts for individual foods, because our sources do not list them.
| Food group | Best known for | Everyday example |
|---|---|---|
| Nuts and seeds | Arginine | A handful with fruit |
| Poultry and fish | Arginine | Baked chicken at dinner |
| Beans and lentils | Arginine | Soup or a bean salad |
| Dairy | Arginine | Yogurt at breakfast |
| Melons and cucumbers | Citrulline | Watermelon on a summer day |
No. 02How much
How much arginine does a normal diet supply?
A typical diet supplies about 4 to 5 g of arginine a day, according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (NIH ODS, arginine and citrulline).
That is a useful yardstick. The lowest arginine dose in blood pressure trials was 4 g a day, and the highest was 24 g (Dong 2011, arginine and BP). So the low end of the trial range matches what many people already eat.
Those trials gave arginine as a supplement, though, so the match is a loose one. Citrulline trials used 3 to 9 g a day (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline and BP). The NIH says citrulline safety has not been well studied (NIH ODS, arginine and citrulline).
A plate carries fiber, fluid and many other nutrients. A capsule carries a few isolated compounds. Comparing them gram for gram misses that.

How does a Melonex capsule compare with food?
A Melonex capsule holds a blend of at most 500 mg, a small fraction of what a day of eating supplies.
The label hides each amount inside the blend. Because the order is by weight, citrulline DL-malate is at most 500 mg, arginine AKG at most 250 mg and arginine HCl at most 167 mg (21 CFR 101.36). These are salt weights, and the amino acid itself is less.
The bars below set those ceilings next to the grams used in trials. Next to a bowl of beans, a capsule is a modest addition.
This is why we call Melonex a supplement beside meals, never a replacement for them.

Should you eat more of these foods for your heart?
Eat them as part of a varied heart-healthy plan, not as a hunt for two amino acids.
The DASH eating plan stresses vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy, fish, poultry, beans and nuts, and limits saturated fat and sweets (NHLBI, DASH eating plan). Many foods on that list also happen to carry arginine.
- Add fruit to breakfast, and a handful of nuts at snack time.
- Choose beans or fish for two dinners a week.
- Stay on prescribed medicine, and talk to your doctor before a big change in diet.

Do you still need a capsule if you eat these foods?
Only you and your doctor can say, and many people will say no.
Food comes first. If you want a daily capsule on top, read the label, check your medicines and ask your pharmacist. The how to use page covers the label directions, and the ingredients page lists each line.
Citrulline forms are compared in citrulline malate vs L-citrulline. The shell is explained in what a vegetable capsule is.

Melonex is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take a nitrate for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil, any blood pressure medicine, a potassium-sparing diuretic, a blood thinner or a diabetes medicine, or if you have had a heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can push blood pressure down further. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

Melonex questions people ask
Is watermelon high in citrulline?
Watermelon is the food most often named for citrulline, and the word comes from its Latin name. Our sources give no gram amount per slice, so we will not guess one. Ripeness and variety change it.
What nuts are highest in arginine?
Our sources do not rank nuts, so we will not name a winner. Nuts and seeds as a group are known arginine foods. A small handful with fruit is an easy way to include them.
Can food alone give you enough citrulline?
No official daily need is set for citrulline, and the NIH says its safety is not well studied. Food supplies some, and your body makes some. Ask your doctor if you wonder about a gap.
Do cooked foods lose arginine?
We found no source in our list that answers this, so we cannot say. Cooking changes foods in many ways. Eating a mix of cooked and fresh foods is the simplest approach.
