Blood Pressure Numbers: What 120/80, 130/80 and 140/90 Mean

Quick answer

Blood pressure numbers are two readings: the top one (systolic) and the bottom one (diastolic). Normal is under 120 and under 80. Stage 1 starts at 130 or 80, and stage 2 at 140 or 90. Only a clinician can diagnose high pressure, and Melonex capsules are not a treatment for it.

No. 01The two numbers

What do blood pressure numbers mean?

Blood pressure numbers tell you how hard blood pushes on your artery walls: the top number when the heart beats, the bottom number between beats.

The top number is called systolic. The bottom number is diastolic. A reading of 120/80 is said “120 over 80,” and both numbers are in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg).

Either number can put you in a higher category. If the top is 118 but the bottom is 84, you are counted by the bottom one.

High pressure usually gives no warning, which is why checks matter (MedlinePlus, High blood pressure). In the United States, 48.1% of adults, about 119.9 million people, have it or take medicine for it, and about one in six of them do not know (CDC, High blood pressure facts).

No. 02Categories

What are the blood pressure categories?

The categories are normal, elevated, stage 1, stage 2 and crisis, and each one is defined by the top and bottom number together.

These ranges come from the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, which agree with each other (AHA, Blood pressure readings) (NHLBI, High blood pressure). Type a reading into the finder to see where it lands. One reading is a snapshot, not a verdict.

  2. ElevatedTop: 120-129Bottom: and under 80
  3. Stage 1Top: 130-139Bottom: or 80-89
  4. Stage 2Top: 140 or higherBottom: or 90 or higher
  5. SevereTop: Over 180Bottom: and/or over 120

Type a reading to see its category. One reading is not a diagnosis; a clinician confirms with readings on separate days.

Categories from the American Heart Association (AHA, Blood pressure readings) and NHLBI (NHLBI, High blood pressure). About 48% of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, and about 1 in 6 of them do not know it (CDC, High blood pressure facts). A reading over 180/120 with chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, weakness, vision change or trouble speaking: call 911.

No. 03Normal range

What is normal blood pressure?

Normal blood pressure for an adult is under 120 over under 80, and the American Heart Association calls below 120/80 optimal (AHA, Life's Essential 8).

That does not mean a lower number is always better for you. A reading of 90/60 or lower is called low blood pressure, and it matters if it brings dizziness or fainting (MedlinePlus, Low blood pressure).

Your own healthy range depends on age, medicines and other conditions. Your clinician sets the goal that fits you.

i

120/80

The line between normal and the first step up. Elevated means 120-129 on top with the bottom under 80.

ii

130/80

Stage 1 begins at 130 on top or 80 on the bottom. It is a reason to talk with a clinician, not a reason to panic.

iii

140/90

Stage 2 begins here. Clinicians often advise lifestyle steps and sometimes medicine.

No. 04At home

How do you take a blood pressure reading at home?

Sit still for five minutes, rest your arm at heart level, and take two readings one minute apart with a validated upper-arm cuff (AHA, Home monitoring).

Picture the kitchen table: back supported, feet flat, cuff on a bare arm just above the elbow crease. Skip coffee, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes first, and empty your bladder.

  1. Prepare

Use an upper-arm cuff in the right size. Wrist and finger devices are not recommended.

  2. Sit quietly

Rest five minutes without talking or looking at a phone.

  3. Measure twice

Take two readings a minute apart, at the same time each day.

  4. Write it down

Bring the log, and the cuff itself once a year, to compare with the clinic's device.

Diagnosis generally needs two or more elevated readings at separate visits (MedlinePlus, High blood pressure). A fast, anxious reading in a parking lot does not count.

No. 05Urgent

When is a blood pressure reading an emergency?

A reading above 180 over 120 is a crisis range. Wait a minute and test again, and call 911 if you also have symptoms (AHA, Blood pressure readings).

Those symptoms are chest pain, shortness of breath, back pain, numbness or weakness, a change in vision, or trouble speaking. Without symptoms, still contact your provider right away (NHLBI, High blood pressure).

No. 06Supplements

Can a high blood pressure supplement bring the numbers down?

A high blood pressure supplement is not a treatment, and no capsule on this site is sold as one. The research on two amino acids shows small changes at large doses.

Melonex lists L-citrulline DL-malate and two forms of L-arginine in a 500 mg blend. In 8 short trials of citrulline, 3-9 g a day went with a systolic reading about 4 mm Hg lower on average (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline and BP). In 11 trials of arginine, 4-24 g a day went with about 5 mm Hg lower on top and 3 lower on the bottom (Dong 2011, arginine and BP).

Now the other side. One Melonex capsule holds at most 500 mg of the first ingredient, and the label hides the single amounts. No trial has tested the capsule. The numbers on your cuff are decided mostly by food, weight, movement, sleep and, when needed, medicine.

Keep taking prescribed medicine

If you take medicine for pressure, keep taking it as directed. Do not swap it for a capsule. The label's own caution asks anyone with a medical condition to consult a physician first.

No. 07Too low

Is there a low blood pressure supplement?

There is no low blood pressure supplement sold here, and the reverse risk matters: some amino acids may push pressure too low when mixed with certain medicines.

Arginine and citrulline can add to the effect of blood pressure medicine, nitrates for chest pain and erectile-dysfunction drugs such as sildenafil (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) (RxList, L-citrulline). Signs of pressure that is too low include dizziness on standing, blurred vision, fainting and unusual tiredness.

If you feel lightheaded, sit down. If it keeps happening, call your doctor before the next capsule. The side effects page covers the signs, and supplements and blood pressure medicines covers the mixes.

No. 08Daily habits

What helps blood pressure numbers most?

The habits with the best evidence are a lower-sodium diet, regular movement, enough sleep, a healthy weight and no tobacco.

The DASH eating plan limits sodium to 2,300 mg a day, and 1,500 mg lowers pressure further (NHLBI, DASH eating plan). Adults need 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (CDC, Adult activity) and at least 7 hours of sleep (CDC, Sleep and heart health).

Capsules, if you choose them, sit at the edge of that day, never at the center. More habits are in heart health basics.

No. 09Next step

What should you do with your numbers?

Keep a log for two weeks, share it with your doctor, and ask before adding any supplement.

If you are curious about Melonex, the label asks for one capsule a day with an 8 oz. glass of water. See the ingredient math first, then decide. Prices are on the pricing page.

No. 10FAQ

Melonex questions people ask

What are normal blood pressure numbers?

Normal is under 120 on the top number and under 80 on the bottom (AHA, Blood pressure readings). Elevated is 120-129 over under 80. Your clinician may set a different goal for you if you have other conditions.

Is 130/80 high blood pressure?

It is stage 1, the first high category, when it holds across readings at different visits (NHLBI, High blood pressure). One reading is not a diagnosis. Repeat it at home, keep a log and ask your clinician what it means for you.

What is a dangerous blood pressure reading?

Above 180 over 120 is the crisis range. Retake it after a minute, and call 911 if you have chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, weakness, vision change or trouble speaking (AHA, Blood pressure readings).

Which blood pressure categories need medicine?

Your clinician decides, using your readings and risk. Lifestyle steps come first for many people, and stage 2 often adds medicine (NHLBI, High blood pressure). Never start or stop a medicine on your own.

Can a high blood pressure supplement replace my pills?

No. Supplements are not approved to treat high pressure, and studies of single amino acids used far larger doses than a Melonex capsule holds. Keep taking prescribed medicine and ask your doctor about any supplement.

Does Melonex work as a low blood pressure supplement?

No. Melonex is not sold to raise pressure, and its ingredients may push pressure lower with some medicines. If you often feel dizzy on standing, talk to your clinician before using it.

How accurate are home blood pressure monitors?

A validated automatic upper-arm cuff in the right size is the best choice (AHA, Home monitoring). Bring it to the clinic once a year and compare it with their device. Wrist and finger monitors are not recommended.
