What Is Nitric Oxide, and Why Do Supplement Labels Mention It?
What is nitric oxide? It is a small gas molecule your own body makes, and it helps blood vessel walls relax. Supplement ads mention it because arginine and citrulline are building blocks in that chain. The Melonex label does not make a nitric oxide claim, and no trial has tested the capsule.

No. 01The basics
What is nitric oxide in the body?
What is nitric oxide? It is a tiny gas that cells in your blood vessel walls make and release for a moment.
Its job is a signal. The gas tells the muscle in a vessel wall to relax, and the vessel can widen a little. It lasts only a moment, so the body makes it again and again as needed.
It is not the laughing gas at the dentist, and it is not the nitrates in processed meat. The names look alike, but they are different things.
Think of a garden hose. A relaxed hose passes more water. Nitric oxide is one of the signals that tells a vessel to loosen its grip.

Why do supplement labels mention nitric oxide?
Labels mention it because the body makes the gas from arginine, and citrulline can be turned into arginine.
That chain is real biology. It is also where the jump happens. A building block existing in a chain does not show that a capsule will change the chain in you.
The ODS reviews both amino acids and found the evidence for performance weak, and it calls citrulline safety not well studied (NIH ODS, arginine and citrulline). The FTC says health claims need good human trials that match the product's dose and form (FTC, Health products guidance).
| Word | What it means |
|---|---|
| Nitric oxide | A gas the body makes to relax vessel walls |
| Arginine | An amino acid the body can use to make it |
| Citrulline | An amino acid the body can turn into arginine |
| Nitrates (medicine) | Chest pain medicines such as nitroglycerin |
| Booster | An ad word with no legal or medical meaning |

Does the Melonex label say anything about nitric oxide?
No. The label names three amino acids, quotes three starred phrases, and does not use the words nitric oxide.
The stamps read "Heart Support*", "Circulation Support*" and "Natural Formula*". The asterisk points to the FDA statement: these statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, and the product is not meant to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
The blend is 500 mg per capsule. Citrulline DL-malate is listed first, then arginine with alpha-ketoglutarate, then arginine HCl. Filter the six label lines below.
- 1L-Citrulline DL-MalateBlend place 1 · at most 500 mg per capsule
- 2L-Arginine (Alpha-Ketoglutarate dihydrate)Blend place 2 · at most 250 mg per capsule
- 3L-Arginine HCLBlend place 3 · at most 167 mg per capsule
- 4Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (capsule)Other ingredient · no amount listed
- 5Microcrystalline CelluloseOther ingredient · no amount listed
- 6Magnesium StearateOther ingredient · no amount listed
From the Supplement Facts panel. Places 1-3 are the 500 mg blend, listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36). The other three lines make the capsule and help it fill; they carry no listed amount.
We do not say the capsule boosts anything in you. Trials of citrulline used 3 to 9 g a day (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline and BP), and trials of arginine used 4 to 24 g a day (Dong 2011, arginine and BP). A capsule holds a small fraction of that.

Why does nitric oxide matter with heart medicines?
It matters because some medicines also relax vessels, and stacking effects can drop pressure too low.
Nitrate chest pain medicines and sildenafil-type drugs are not meant to be taken together. RxList rates citrulline with either one as a major interaction: do not combine (RxList, L-citrulline).
If you use any of these, the plan is simple. Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor about every supplement before you add one.
- Name your supplements at each pharmacy visit.
- Ask before adding a new one.
- Sit down and call your doctor if you feel faint.
No. 05Reading ads
How can you read a nitric oxide ad calmly?
Ask four questions, and the hype usually settles.
What was tested?
Look for the exact form and dose, not just the ingredient name.
Who took part?
Small and short trials show little. Ours cannot say more.
What is the claim?
A starred phrase is not a finding. See how the capsule is meant to work.
What does your doctor say?
That is the one answer built around you.
Also compare amino acid forms in citrulline vs arginine. The ingredients page lists each line.

Melonex is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take a nitrate for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil, any blood pressure medicine, a potassium-sparing diuretic, a blood thinner or a diabetes medicine, or if you have had a heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can push blood pressure down further. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.
No. 06FAQ
Melonex questions people ask
Is nitric oxide the same as nitrates?
No. Nitric oxide is a gas your body makes. Nitrates are chemicals in some foods and in chest pain medicines such as nitroglycerin. Never combine nitrate medicine with a new supplement without asking your doctor or pharmacist.
Does Melonex contain nitric oxide?
No. The label lists L-citrulline DL-malate, L-arginine alpha-ketoglutarate and L-arginine HCl, plus capsule and filler ingredients. Nitric oxide is a gas the body makes, and it is not an ingredient.
Can you measure nitric oxide at home?
We know of no home test we can recommend, and our sources do not cover one. Blood pressure readings are the usual home number. Ask your doctor what to track.
Is a nitric oxide supplement safe with sildenafil?
Not without asking. MedlinePlus warns against sildenafil with nitrates, and RxList lists citrulline with sildenafil-type drugs as do not combine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.
