Proprietary Blend Math: How to Estimate What a Capsule Holds
Proprietary blend math is a way to estimate hidden amounts from the label order. Divide the blend total by each ingredient's place: in a 500 mg blend, place two holds at most 250 mg and place three at most 167 mg. It gives ceilings and ranges, never exact amounts, and it is not lab proof.

No. 01The rule
What is a proprietary blend, and what does the label order tell you?
A proprietary blend is a group of ingredients shown with one total weight instead of one weight each.
Federal rules say the ingredients in a blend must be listed in descending order of predominance by weight, and the blend amount is the total weight of its ingredients (21 CFR 101.36). Single amounts inside the blend are not required.
That order is the clue. The first name weighs the most, the last weighs the least. You cannot read grams from it, but you can read limits.
No. 02Four steps
How do you do proprietary blend math?
Proprietary blend math takes four steps, and a pocket calculator is enough.
Find the blend total
On Melonex it is 500 mg per capsule.
Number the ingredients
Citrulline DL-malate is 1, arginine AKG is 2, arginine HCl is 3.
Divide the total by the place number
500 divided by 2 is 250. 500 divided by 3 is about 167.
Read the answer as "at most"
The real amount can be lower, never higher.
If place three weighed more than 167 mg, places one and two would each weigh at least as much, and the three together would pass 500 mg.

What does the math say about a Melonex capsule?
It says citrulline DL-malate is at most 500 mg, arginine AKG at most 250 mg and arginine HCl at most 167 mg per capsule.
Those are salt weights. The three sum to 500 mg, so an even split is about 167 mg each, and at least one line must be below that. At the label's top of two capsules, the ceilings double.

No. 04Ranges
Can you estimate a floor as well as a ceiling?
Yes, for the first place only: the heaviest of three ingredients cannot weigh less than an even split.
If three amounts add to 500 mg, the largest must be at least about 167 mg. Places two and three could be very small. So the honest picture is a range for each line.
| Label line | Lowest | Highest |
|---|---|---|
| 1 L-citrulline DL-malate | about 167 mg | 500 mg |
| 2 L-arginine AKG | above 0 mg | 250 mg |
| 3 L-arginine HCl | above 0 mg | 167 mg |
ODS gives citrulline malate as 56.64 percent citrulline by weight (NIH ODS, arginine and citrulline). If that ratio holds, the citrulline itself is at most about 283 mg. Trials used 3 to 9 g a day (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline and BP).
No. 05The limits
What can proprietary blend math not tell you?
It cannot tell you the real amount, the purity, or whether the capsule does anything.
An estimate is not a test. Only a lab report can show what is in a capsule, and none is published for Melonex. Trials of arginine used 4 to 24 g a day (Dong 2011, arginine and BP), and no trial tested this capsule.
Use the math to compare, ask better questions and avoid being impressed by a big blend total. A big total can hide a small amount of the ingredient you care about.
Stay on prescribed medicine, and let your doctor know about any supplement. Read the whole label in the supplement facts page, and see the ingredient notes in the ingredients page. Related reading: FDA registered vs approved.

Melonex is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take a nitrate for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil, any blood pressure medicine, a potassium-sparing diuretic, a blood thinner or a diabetes medicine, or if you have had a heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can push blood pressure down further. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

Melonex questions people ask
What is the 500 divided by k rule?
It is a shortcut. When a blend total is divided by an ingredient's place number k, the answer is the most that ingredient can weigh. In a 500 mg blend, place two is at most 250 mg.
Why do companies hide amounts in a blend?
Federal rules let them show one total for the blend, so they need not print each weight. Reasons are the maker's own, and the Melonex label gives none. We do not guess at motives.
Does a bigger blend total mean more active ingredient?
No. A large total can be mostly the heaviest ingredient, with tiny amounts of the rest. Always check the order and do the math for each line.
Is Melonex a fully disclosed formula?
No. The three ingredients are named in weight order, but the amount of each is not printed. Only the 500 mg blend total is shown, with the daily value not established.
