Melonex and Exercise: What the Workout Studies Used

Quick answer

Melonex and exercise is a question the label does not answer. The NIH sheet says arginine studies used 2-20 g a day with little or no effect on exercise performance, and citrulline research does not give strong support either. One Melonex capsule holds at most 500 mg of blend, so it sits far below those grams.

No. 01The short answer

Does Melonex help with exercise?

Melonex makes no exercise claim on its label, and the public data on its ingredients do not support one. The NIH summary found little or no effect of arginine on performance.

The label's three stamps (see supplement facts) are about the heart, circulation and a natural formula, each marked with an asterisk that points to the FDA statement. Exercise performance is not among them.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says arginine studies used 2 to 20 g a day with little or no effect on exercise performance (NIH ODS, arginine and citrulline). For citrulline, it says the research does not give strong support for performance, and safety has not been well assessed.

So the honest answer is that workout benefits are unproven for this capsule and for most of the research behind it. If you enjoy exercise, keep it. Just do not credit a capsule for it.

No. 02The grams

How much arginine and citrulline did the workout studies use?

The studies used grams a day: 2 to 20 g of arginine, and citrulline for 1 to 16 days. A Melonex capsule holds at most hundreds of milligrams.

Citrulline malate is 56.64% citrulline by weight, so 1 g gives about 566 mg of citrulline (NIH ODS, arginine and citrulline). The first ingredient on the label can make up at most 500 mg of a capsule, which means about 283 mg of citrulline at the very most.

Workout study amounts vs. one Melonex capsule (ceilings, not exact amounts)
IngredientStudied for exerciseOne capsule, at most
L-arginine2 to 20 g a day250 mg (AKG form) plus 167 mg (HCl form)
Citrulline malateStudies of 1 to 16 days500 mg of the salt

The label hides the single amounts, so these are ceilings from the order of the list. The weights belong to the salt forms. Even at the label's top of two capsules, the whole blend is at most 1,000 mg, one gram in total. Read the ingredients guide for the full math.

No. 03Staying safe

Is it safe to take Melonex before a workout?

It depends on you. The label tells people with a known medical condition to consult a physician, and exercise adds its own load on the heart.

Arginine can add to blood pressure medicines, and pressure may drop too low (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). The side effects guide shows the signs. Exercise can bring on light-headedness by itself. Together they are a reason to go slowly and ask first.

  1. 01

    Check with your doctor

Before starting a new routine, ask whether exercise is safe for your heart and medicines.

  2. 02

    Warm up and drink water

Take the capsule with water as the label says. Start the session easy.

  3. 03

    Know when to stop

Stop if you feel dizzy, faint or have chest pain. Chest pain means 9-1-1.

  4. 04

    Write down what happened

Note the session, the capsule and any symptoms in your log.

Adults need 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, plus muscle work on 2 days, per the CDC (CDC, Adult activity). That goal does not depend on a capsule.

No. 04Heart history

Who should skip arginine before exercising?

Anyone who has had a heart attack should ask a cardiologist before any arginine. A trial in that group was stopped early.

In VINTAGE MI, 153 adults took arginine 3 g three times a day for 6 months after a first heart attack. Six died on arginine and none on placebo (VINTAGE MI trial (ACC summary)). That dose is far above one capsule, but it is a clear reason to ask first.

Keep the plan simple

Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your doctor about any supplement and any new workout. Never start a hard routine because of a bottle.

Before you take it

Melonex is a dietary supplement, not a treatment. Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take a nitrate for chest pain, an erectile-dysfunction drug such as sildenafil, any blood pressure medicine, a potassium-sparing diuretic, a blood thinner or a diabetes medicine, or if you have had a heart attack. Arginine and citrulline can push blood pressure down further. Keep taking prescribed medicine. See side effects and interactions.

No. 06FAQ

Melonex questions people ask

Is Melonex a pre-workout supplement?

No. The label calls it a dietary supplement and carries no pre-workout wording. It lists three amino acids in a 500 mg blend and no stimulants. The NIH data found little or no performance effect for arginine.

Can I take Melonex after the gym?

The label prints no time of day and asks for one capsule with an 8 oz. glass of water. After a workout is not forbidden, but rehydrate first. Ask your doctor if you take pressure medicine.

Does citrulline build muscle?

The NIH says citrulline research does not give strong support for performance, and its studies lasted only 1 to 16 days. No study of this capsule exists, so we cannot say it builds muscle.
